Japanese patent translation

Japanese patent documents translated into English, complete and literal where the claims demand it.

What we translate

Patent documents

  • Patent specifications and claims
  • Published applications and granted patents, for prior-art review
  • Technical papers and reports cited in applications
  • Correspondence about patent matters
What to use it for

For review, research and drafting

Our translations are used to understand what a Japanese patent covers, to review prior art, and as a working draft for your patent attorney.

For a translation that will be filed with a patent office, your attorney should review the final text. We work with their comments.

How patents differ

Why patent translation is its own discipline

Nothing added, nothing dropped

A claim defines legal scope. We translate every element of it and do not smooth, shorten or clarify beyond what the Japanese says.

The same word every time

Each element keeps one English term throughout. Where the Japanese uses 前記, the English refers back with “the” or “said”, consistently.

Set phrases have set equivalents

Forms such as 〜を特徴とする (“characterized in that”) and 請求項 (“claim”) are rendered in the wording patent readers expect.
